Book Review:

WHAT A DAUGHTER NEEDS FROM HER DAD
By: Michael Farris

Reviewed by: M. McNett, Vincent, California
This book was originally published in 1996 under the title “How a Man Prepares His Daughters for Life”. This new work “now includes new material on relating to an adult daughter”.

I received an advance reading copy of this book and noted the subtitle: “How a man prepares his daughter for life”. Considering the fact that we homeschool our children, and that we have a 15 ½ year old daughter, I thought this book would be germane to our lives.

My motivation for reading this book was actually two fold; 1) insights into my relationship with my 15 ½ year old daughter and 2) counsel from a man whose Christian perspective, avocation and investment into homeschooling I respect. Michael Farris is the founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, president of Patrick Henry College, and a constitutional lawyer. He was named one of the top 100 faces in education of the 20th century by Education Week.

In addition to the insight shared by Michael Farris based upon the raising and homeschooling of his 6 daughters (and 4 sons), I was particularly taken by the pragmatic suggestions he had for Christian living. For example, in section 3, “Solving the Mystery of Spiritual Leadership”, Mr. Farris tells about an experiment he tried on New Year’s Eve “several years ago”. He told his older girls that if they would read the Bible every single day for the entire year he would pay them $100 on New Year’s Day the following year (you’ll have to read for yourself how he administered this experiment). I have implemented this same program in our house as of January 1st of this year for both my daughter and son.

We need more of what Mr. Farris is bringing us with this work. Clearly the Bible is our instruction manual for daily living. But books like “What a Daughter Needs from Her Dad” are the compliment that a Dad needs to raise his daughters in today’s society.
