LEARNING LANGUAGE ARTS THROUGH LITERATURE SERIES

We just started this program 2 months ago, and I am already sold. I truly enjoy it and think it's very thorough. HOWEVER, my 7 year old asked me why she was doing kindergarden work. :-). It is very very easy and I would have to tell anyone who hasn't used it before, to buy a grade level HIGHER than what your child is at. I have been doing a chapter a day, just to refresh the main points in each section, and will order the 3rd grade (yellow) edition in a week or so.

I also can add that we skipped the book reading in this entire program, but rather focused strickly on the ENGLISH and grammar portions. I use BJU reading and really love it, so although I needed a good English program, we didn't need another reading program.

I hope this has helped some of you if you were on the fence about this program.

I have used the yellow book which is for the third grade. The student copies small bits of good literature directly from the book. The student reads the lesson on their own asking questions when needed and then applies what they've learned. This program does not require very much preparation at all. We love it! They cost about $20.00 and are published by Common Sense Press.

Having heard many great things about this program, we decided to start with the Yellow Book (3rd grade). I started questioning my decision as I read through the introductory material and found several grammatical errors. It was downhill from there. I tried to make it work, but was so frustrated by the errors that I finally put it away.

We began with the Red Book for second grade and I was very impressed with the content. Another child had spent 4 years in a "traditional" text and my second grader covered everything in one year the other child spent years learning. I took the word lists in the back of the Red Book and copied them on heavy paper and laminated them. The words then became concentration games to teach and review new concepts. This year we are using the tan book for both children. It is a welcome time in the day when we put away individual texts and work together. I am narrating to both but allowing the younger child to write shorter passages. It has been a blessing for our family.

Both of my 4th grade boys were in desparate need of punctuation and grammar improvement. After reading Ruth Beechick's book we purchased LLATL orange book. We have followed it loosely (I occasionally substituted paragraphs from the Catholic National Reader and their current favorite books). We have only finished half of the orange book because my boys initially needed so much practice with copying. In spite of our slow progress, they have both demonstrated amazing improvements in writing. I would estimate they are at least up to grade level in composition skills. My ten year old also shows much needed improvement in spellling. I highly recommend this book or any other that follows Mrs. Beechicks recommendations for Language.
