BOOK REVIEW:
I started using this program and after 2 years of it, I changed to a regular old fashioned writing program. The reason I switched is due in part to the use of regular handwriting in all our books. It was difficult for my daughter and confusing to her to see such different writing in ALL the books we used. The other reason is that I do not write that way and that too confused her, so we switched. 
This program is slightly unorthodox, but I chose it because it is basically how I write, and I've never been one to care for all the loops of traditional cursive. The workbooks are great, and easy to use. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own writing throughout the book. The transition to cursive is easy because most letters remain the same, but are joined. This, however, caused us to part somewhat from the program. I noticed my daughter admiring the more traditional cursive her friends were learning, and I, too, was not happy with a few of the italic cursive letters. So we have modified the italic cursive to suit our personal likes (such as using a traditional cursive "L" and "r"--both in her name). All in all, I still favor this over a "loopy" cursive and will continue to use it with our son.
We love the Italic Handwriting Series. My daughter likes this style of writing. The only problem I see with it is that I need to teach my daughter to read the traditional cursive. There are some joins in the Italic Cursive that we don't use. We have changed it to fit our style. It has improved my daughters printing. |
